Finnish curriculum

By · Chief Marketing Officer

The Finnish curriculum is famous for its play-based early years, minimal standardised testing, high teacher autonomy and a strong equity ethos. A handful of Finnish-inspired international schools apply the national curriculum framework outside Finland, typically in bilingual form (Finnish + English + local language).

Ages 0–6

Early Childhood (Varhaiskasvatus)

Play-based, holistic early years centred on well-being, relationships and outdoor time. Formal reading and maths are deliberately deferred.

Ages 7–16

Basic Education (Perusopetus)

Nine years of compulsory education. Broad, phenomenon-based learning; light testing; strong emphasis on the teacher as designer of learning. Ends with the Basic Education Certificate.

Ages 16–19

Upper Secondary (Lukio) & Matriculation

Three-year academic route culminating in the Ylioppilastutkinto matriculation exams. Compulsory native language, maths, second national language, plus electives.

Finnish

Phenomenon-based learning

Since 2016, the Finnish national curriculum has embedded multi-disciplinary "phenomenon-based learning" modules — where students explore a real-world theme across subjects. It sits alongside traditional subject teaching rather than replacing it.

Is Finnish right for your child?

It tends to suit families who…

  • Value play, well-being and low-stress early years
  • Believe in high teacher autonomy
  • Are moving to Finland or want a Nordic ethos
  • Prefer minimal standardised testing

It may be less ideal if…

  • You want early formal literacy and numeracy
  • You're targeting UK/US universities via a high-recognition qualification
  • The lack of standardised assessment worries you

Common questions

FAQs about the Finnish curriculum

Is Finnish-inspired the same as Finnish curriculum? +
No. A school "inspired by Finnish education" might just borrow the pedagogy. Only a small number of schools abroad actually follow the Finnish national core curriculum and are recognised by Finland's Ministry of Education.
Is the Finnish matriculation accepted internationally? +
Yes — UK, US and EU universities accept it, though offers may need conversion into local currency (percentage grades) and specific subjects may be required for STEM courses.
