Malaysian curriculum

By · B2C Marketing Manager

The Malaysian national curriculum is set by the Ministry of Education (KPM). Students progress through primary (UPSR), lower secondary (PT3, now assessments) and upper secondary (SPM) before Form 6 or Matriculation and then university. Internationally the curriculum is offered at Malaysian-affiliated schools and to Malaysian-diaspora families.

Ages 7–12

Primary

Six years of primary education. Bahasa Malaysia and English are compulsory throughout; strong mathematics and moral/religious education foundations.

Ages 13–17

Secondary (Lower + Upper)

Lower-secondary Forms 1–3 ending with the PT3 assessment; upper secondary Forms 4–5 culminating in SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) — the standard Malaysian school-leaving exam.

Ages 17–19

Form 6 / STPM

Optional two-year pre-university programme leading to the STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) — a rigorous pre-university qualification recognised by universities internationally.

Malaysian

STPM, SPM and university routes

Universities within Malaysia accept SPM as an entry credential in combination with STPM or the government-run Matriculation programme. International universities typically ask for STPM or A-Level; SPM alone is usually not enough for most overseas entry.

Is Malaysian right for your child?

It tends to suit families who…

  • Have Malaysian family or are relocating to Malaysia
  • Are aiming at Malaysian universities or ASEAN routes
  • Value bilingual (Malay + English) instruction

It may be less ideal if…

  • You need a globally-portable single qualification (IB is more portable)
  • You'd prefer English-medium instruction throughout senior years

Common questions

FAQs about the Malaysian curriculum

Is SPM enough for UK universities? +
On its own, usually no. UK universities typically ask for STPM, A-Level, IB or foundation-year completion following SPM.
Do I need to speak Bahasa Malaysia? +
For the national curriculum, yes — Bahasa Malaysia is a compulsory subject. International Malaysian schools often offer English-medium delivery with Bahasa taught as a subject.
