Swiss curriculum

By · Chief Marketing Officer

Swiss curricula vary by canton but most international Swiss schools follow the Swiss Matura — the federal university-entrance qualification. It's known for academic depth, multilingualism (German, French, Italian and often English are all required to varying degrees), and a strong emphasis on the sciences and humanities equally.

Ages 4–12

Primarschule

Canton-specific primary curriculum. Multilingual from early years; strong grounding in maths, science and languages.

Ages 12–15

Sekundarstufe I

Lower secondary streamed by academic strength. Foundations across the humanities, sciences and languages.

Ages 15–19

Gymnasium (Matura)

Academic upper secondary culminating in the cantonal Matura with federal recognition. Broad subject set including two foreign languages, mathematics, science, humanities and a specialisation.

Swiss

Multilingualism at the core

Most Matura students leave fluent in two foreign languages plus their mother tongue — a distinctive feature of the Swiss system that even IB or A-Levels don't guarantee.

Is Swiss right for your child?

It tends to suit families who…

  • Value multilingualism and academic rigour
  • Are moving to Switzerland or nearby
  • Are aiming at ETH Zürich, EPFL or top European universities

It may be less ideal if…

  • You'd prefer a globally uniform curriculum
  • The cantonal variation is confusing
  • Your child dislikes juggling multiple languages

Common questions

FAQs about the Swiss curriculum

Is the Swiss Matura accepted internationally? +
Yes — Swiss Matura is widely accepted at UK universities (Russell Group typically expect strong Matura grades), US universities, and globally. ETH and EPFL are world-ranked and accept Matura directly without further entrance exams.
How does it compare to IB or Abitur? +
Swiss Matura sits comfortably alongside IB Diploma and German Abitur in terms of academic depth and university recognition. Where it stands out is the language requirement — most Matura students leave fluent in two foreign languages plus their mother tongue.
