The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the UK's statutory framework for children aged 0–5, updated most recently in 2021. It's used by British international nurseries and pre-schools worldwide, and covers seven areas of learning — three "prime" (personal, social & emotional; physical; communication & language) and four "specific" (literacy, maths, understanding the world, expressive arts & design). Provision culminates in the EYFS Profile at the end of Reception (age 5).
Personal, social and emotional development; physical development; communication and language. Play-based, adult-led and child-initiated in balance.
Literacy, maths, understanding the world, and expressive arts & design layered on top of the prime areas. Ends with the EYFS Profile — a baseline against 17 Early Learning Goals.
EYFS
EYFS is a statutory framework — it sets learning goals and assessment expectations — but it's flexible on pedagogy. Many British international nurseries deliver EYFS with strong Montessori or Reggio-inspired influences. What distinguishes EYFS is the statutory framework and the EYFS Profile snapshot at age 5, not a particular teaching philosophy.
